emc85Spectatormy name is norman…and i am a laser addict. i am not sure how to deal with my addiction. for us in canada, we really have the delight and the waterlase.
i have visited with both reps…nice people and nice products. it seems like the service is great in the u.s., but lasers are just growing into the canadian awareness. and i have to wonder how much attention i can expect out of both these companies being in canada?
if some of the canadian laser users can chime in to let me know how each laser company has stood behind their products…whichever laser they have…and tell me their stories…it would help in my decision.

Glenn van AsSpectatorHi Norman…….as you and I have discussed a bit by email, the support is pretty good in Canada and there are more and more educational courses sprouting up all over the place including Vancouver this weekend and Calgary a couple of weekends ago.
As more users get involved in this there will be a growing need for people to train others and the techs will have to become busier and more knowledgeable.
The marketing opportunities will become less as more units get out there.
I would love to hear what guys like Andrew, and Paul have to say, maybe Vince, some of the other laser users here from Canada.
What have your experiences been.
Glenn
vinceSpectatorHi Norman,
This summer I purchased the DElight laser. I chose it over the Waterlase for many reasons, one of the most important being the local support for the machine. The Institute for Laser Dentistry handles the distribution, technical support (none needed so far, excellent laser!) and laser education (ALD proficiency exams too) here in southern Ontario. My experience with the Delight laser to date has been extremely positive.
As Glen noted, more and more dentists are becoming aware of the applicability of lasers and are starting to purchase them. Here in the Toronto area, I am seeing more and more ads from dentists using lasers. WRT marketing, I have already done 2 direct mail blitzes with a really good response: Alot of which is phone calls and in office consults by prospective patients with a lot of questions who almost all eventually join the practice. It is understood by all laser dentists that Biolase is a juggernaut when it comes to marketing their products (kudos to them), and I believe we all benefit from this. I think that the Waterlase and the Delight lasers are more similar than they are different, where it matters most…in the clinical setting. But there is a difference with regards to the delivery system, handpieces, size, noise and price.
If you want to know more about my experiences with each company and how I arrived at my decision, please e-mail me.
Good Luck!Vince
ASISpectatorHi Norman,
I understand your addiction. Let’s call it a passion. It sounds more sincere and your better half (if you are attached) might be more understanding that way.
First off, you are on the right forum to cultivate and to fuel your passion. There are some very well informed people who post and share unselfishly here. Thanks to Ron again.
In Calgary, I understand there are a number of laser users already. A good start after chatting with the local reps will be to arrange some over the shoulder clinical visits and get a feel from the different users to see how their set up and experience will relate to your own office.
I did that as part of my decision making process by spending time at Glenn’s office and chatting with him. He is a very positive influence on me.
Next is to request an office demo to test it for yourself along with attending laser courses and meeting other users and potential users to further educate yourself.
The Institute of Laser Dentistry is certainly a good source for laser info. They really do place emphasis on education first with making sales more of a secondary issue.
I went with the Hoya ConBio DELight and am very happy with its performance since June.
Good researching and have fun.

drnewittSpectatorHi Norman
I am also Delight owner… leaser. I have had my laser for just over 2 months now but I spent about a year looking into them before my purchase. Once I had been educated in the physics of lasers and had a better understanding of the players in the market and who was offering what it came down to two lasers, the Delight and the Waterlase.
The decision was not based on huge differences between the physical properties of either laser but more what each company was offering along with the laser. While Biolase was well ahead of ConBio in terms of marketing support with the laser ConBio’s rep. The Laser Institute had much more to offer me in the way of education and service support. I was definitely interested in as much education as possible, the more advanced the better. The Laser Institute seemed to be the better fit in that regard so I went for the Delight.
Since I have had the laser I have performed over 150 procedures and am doing more each day. It is amazing how much easier life has become. Today for example I had a patient who we were providing 5 anterior veneers and 1 crown (canine to canine). With laser in hand I was able to provide gingival recontouring without needing to send her off to perio and wait. She really wanted to have all the work done before Christmas so this was a huge benefit for her to have it done in office during prep procedures.
I also did a single canal endo today and used the Laser for decontamination of the canal, possibly cutting treatment time down. Having opened the canal and GT instrumented in about 5 minutes I would normally have to wait 30-40 minutes with the NaOCl but with the laser I could disinfect the area in no time.
So far things have been great! I am still learning to get comfortable with settings for various treatments. Here is what I have found so far.
– I have Increased the number of procedures I am doing and expanded my scope of practice
– Have had no problems with the functioning of the laser other than a few accidents with tips (eg. Chipping the tip from sterilization procedures )
– My patients have been very excited about the laser for the most part. I have had a few that say the popping sound scares them.– Have had a few patients feel a fair bit of sensitivity even with small occlusals but I am still getting comfortable with laser anesthesia and most are not having sensitivity, especially on anterior work.
– Have had some firsts. Eg, removing two large amalgams in molars with only laser anesthesia and no sensitivity for the patient.
– Have had great success with treating ulcers and cold sores.
Hope that helps. If you have anymore questions fell free to email me Norman
Glenn van AsSpectatorGreat testamonials Andrew, Vince and Paul……..sounds like a broken record that laser dentistry is what it is cracked up to be and that its as advertised, mind you they are all on the payroll receiving kickbacks for all laser sales………..
JUST KIDDING!!
