    Hi guys,
Seeing the freezing of skin after sports injuries, how about putting the water bottle in the refrigerator to numb the tooth with cold water? I tried this in the laser in the numbing phase to remove an amalgam with the high speed. The patient said he felt the drill ‘just a little’. Then I changed the water to room temperature water to remove the caries. (I also cheated with the slow speed)
It worked OK but this patient refuses anesth anyway so it wasn’t the best test. What do you experts think?
    Thanks,

Hey Mitchell cool idea. I dont think that cold water is a good idea for abfractive areas or recession where the patient is complaining of the air and cold but for amalgams it might work. I think that having two water bottles may add a little to the time but its a good idea and something worth trying.

What you will definitely find though with all erbiums is some patients just find it too sensitive and others love it without much sensitivity at all. To some degree you can predict the patients at either end of the spectrum (older patients who always are calm in the chair and often dont want anaesthetic are a breeze and the patients who flinch with cotton rolls in their mouth are not gonna respond magically to lasers) but its the ones in between who we can surprise ourselves with success or at times with frustrations.

THose are the tricky ones and perhaps your two bottle technique is better than mine where one bottle is warm water and the other bottle is brandy the patient drinks in the waiting room, and brings back to me for a snort if they still are sensitive!!

    Grin (I am kidding !!)
