I met this past weekend with Opus and was wondering if any one had any input on the comapny and the hard tissue system that they use including the “touch” approach of the system. Also how does this compare with the biolase system

I’ve been a soft tissue Nd:YAG user going on 4 years, got an OpusDuo Erbium last month for hard tissue.
The touch screen/ computer techology, handpiece.wave-arm delivery system and the foot control to vary power during delivery sold me.
It’s a hard machine to get, I ordered at the ADA meeting in October. They set up a standard profiency certification class for me to attend, The laser was professionally installed, local rep came the following day to go over all settings, questions, etc.
The Erbium laser fits in well for my no amalgam/ Microdentistry practice. I use it in conjunction with Air Abrasion. Use the Nd:YAG for most soft tissue needs.
I’ve ben impressed with not having to use Local Anesthetic, even in deep caries cases or trimming the gingiva on Clas V preps or root desensitization.
Let me know if I can be of any help. I’ll be at the Academy of Laser Dentistry Meeting this coming Weekend. I’ll be able to get any answers there.

Here is a picture of the OpusDuo Laser Center, I wanted the laser without the CO2.
Mine just has the Erbium laser.
    Looks good.

    Jeff,

I looked at the Opus Duo at the ALD last week, and was quite impressed.  Do you still like yours?  How well is the hollow wave guide delivery working for you?  I’m also considering the Continuum.  Their rep says that Lumenis is in trouble.  Any truth to that?  Thanks.

    Bill,
No problems so far w/ the OpusDuo.
The hollow wave guide is the truest delivery system for this pulse width.
One of my classmates. Advanced Profiency and Educator sttus with ALD (Mitch Lomke, he presented Thursday), was a Continium user and switced to the older Opus machine w/o the bells and whistles, his recommendation and the touch screen and foot control sold me.
Opus is the dental wing of Lumenis, a &#36800 million a year worldwide Medical laser company. I asked my rep and he said they are making a commitment to the dental market. See their websites Lumenis and OpusDent.
I’m happy so far. Do your research.
Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Thanks, Jeff.  This is from the Lumenis web site:

    February 19, 2003

LumenisTM Ltd. (NASDAQ: LUME) today announced financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2002. The Company reported revenues of &#3679.4 million for the quarter, compared to &#36100.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2001. The net loss in the fourth quarter of 2002 was &#3639.7 million, or &#361.07 per diluted share. The loss includes non-recurring charges of &#3619.8 million principally for asset write-downs and litigation reserves. In the fourth quarter of 2001, the Company reported a net loss of &#363.9 million or &#36.11 per diluted share.

For the year 2002, net revenues were &#36348.5 million and the net loss was &#3644.1 million compared to revenues of &#36315.2 million and a net loss of &#36145.9 million in 2001.

I have concerns whether or not a company losing this much money will continue to support its product.  The dental divison accounts for only 3% of total sales.  It could be the first to be cut.

Hi Bill: I agree but Ray Tang and Bob Gregg know alot about the trials and tribulations of these companies and often will post insights as to what they see.

Lasers are a tough business to make money, lots of cash goes into R and D and in addition there is alot of cash spent marketing . Biolase is starting to make some money but boy did they ever pour it out in the beginning and many questioned whether the return would be there for them.

Hopefully Lumenis and Opus are on the same pathway because if one laser company folds it sets everyone back a step. People assume all laser companies are on the verge of bankruptcy.

If anyone is going to the Hinman next week , check out Hoya ConBios new booth. I gather its quite a nice one and I will be giving a couple 15-20 minute lectures there on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon.

    all the best

    Glenn
