After an office demo I purchased a DElight in December. It arrived in the beginning of January and sat until the 29th– nearest date the rep could come and set the machine up.

I didn’t have many fills scheduled for that day, so the rep left. First fill w/it I began getting an error 85 msg. Long story short, it had to be shipped back, which they arranged the next day.

Evidently I am supposed to get a new laser, but at some undetermined date in the future. I’ll keep everybody posted, but as of now I’m ready to cancel the deal.

    Regards,

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Using lasers does require patience from time to time. You can use this time to assess the reasons you wanted to use a laser in your practice.

Hoya is a good company, and you should get specific answers as to delivery schedules. If not, call Tom Haney at company headquarters.

The DELight is the most stable and reliable erbium laser IMHO, so down time is unusual.

Like computers, if a laser is going to fail, they fail in the first 1-3 months, well within the warranty period.

My concern for you, though, is getting any laser w/o training first. I would recommend going to Hoya sponsored LVI course and/or connecting with Glenn on getting his instructional DVD. Attend the ALD in Palm Springs and go through the Standard Proficiency Course. Do it before you receive you new laser.

    Just my thoughts.

Dear Jeff……I will talk to Tom Haney tomorrow night in Vegas and mention your plight.

Hoya has been a good company to deal with and I am sure they will make things right for you.

My laser has had very little go wrong with it , and I know that extensive testing goes on with the lasers prior to them leaving the plant….(I have seen it), so I would assume this is a rare situation but when it happens to you it sure makes you angry.

I will talk to Tom tomorrow but if you want to call him yourself his number is

    510 445 4502……..

    email is thaney@conbio.com

Hope this helps and I will try to mention it to him this weekend for sure and let you know about it on Monday next week.

    All the best

Here is the laser update. My Delight arrived at 1pm today– I set it up myself and had it running by 1:45! The water caddy that came with it was DOA however, so I have to use city water until a new one comes.

I did 9 class II’s sans anesthesia! Hot damn! However, these non-functioning issues weigh heavily on my mind. Another source of dissatisfaction is the user manual– really nothing there.

    Regards everybody,

    Jeff

Hey Jeff: I agree with the frustrations you are sharing and would agree that the user manual can be updated.

What kinds of things do you think would improve the manual?

If you need a hand just email me and I will try to do the best that I can.

Thanks again and it was great meeting you in Vegas……I had alot of fun this time!

    HI Jeff,

Murphy’s law rears its head again! Sorry about the water caddy. We get them directly from DCI, and usually they are very reliable….but obviously not 100%. You should have the replacement by now.

Re: the Operator’s Manual, we are in the process of updating it now – especially to include the latest information from the ALD on the use of nitrous. However, this manual is really only intended to review the machine, its safety features, calibration procedures, etc. Also, some is simply to satisfy many of the requirements of the FDA and CDRH.

Have you looked at the Clinical Procedures Guidelines? This is also something that could use a facelift, but in general most people have found it to be helpful.

But kudos to you for uncrating your DELight and getting it up and running by yourself 45 minutes after it arrived!! It really is hard to appreciate how far we have come where that is even possible with a free running flashlamp pulsed laser…let alone with a fiber delivered erbium. It’s the long run that counts, and I hope a year from now, these first couple of hiccups pale in comparison to a long, fruitful, and uninterrupted use of you laser.

DCI update: I have a big sheepish grin on my face at the moment. The problem with the unit was, ah, um, me. FYI to everybody, you turn the screw IN to start the flow of air, not out, which was what I assumed.

Just for the record, I’m very happy with the laser. My only bitch is that I must write a &#3644k check soon! : )

    Regards,

    Jeff

Glad things worked out for you Jeff!!!

I’ve had my DELight for 9 months with no problems.
