zendentistSpectatorDoes anyone use their diode in a non contact optical fashion for cutting tissue? This is becoming an increasingly hot topic with manufacturers releasing 940 and 980 nm units; my personal experience isthe diode is primarily a contact unit for cutting due to the surface char that forms in non-contact mode. Opinions, please!
AnonymousGuestDon't have a diode anymore but I'd agree with you a diode is a diode is a diode…AKA hot glass.
zendentistSpectatorThat's been my opinion for quite a while, Ron, but I just wanted to check and see if I've been missing anything. IMHO, a diode's greatest advantage is the fact you can pick it up and carry it around, not unlike Dino…
DinoDMDSpectatorWhat are you talking about Zen? I can be picked up and carried around very easily.
Just ask Cletus!
zendentistSpectatorThat was what I meant, Diode…er, Dino ; )
Glenn van AsSpectatorHI guys…….first post on the new forum. I cant believe that a diode will work in non contact unless you bump up the power and dont initiate the tip.
I use non contact for things like apthous ulcers, clotting after extractions and for dark hemangiomas on lips.
As for actually cutting tissue, how does that work?
PS you gotta have good vision (read magnification) to do this as these fibers are close to the resolution of the human eye (200 microns is the resolution, most fibers are clear and 300 microns) and that wont make it easy to keep it non contact.
Just my thoughts on this…..

But, Glenn, all the new 940 and 980 nm manufacturers claim that their improved absorption allows non-contact cutting. So it has to be true, right?
Kenneth LukSpectatorYes, I've cut tissue in non contact mode with 400um fiber with my 30W diode. Did a congnenital epulis ( 5mm x 12mm ) on upper right c and d ridge on a 19 day old baby girl. Cut on the specimen looked as raw as a scapel cut. I'm trying to get a histological view on the excision site. you can hardly see the wound on 2 days post-op Will keep you posted.

KenKen, you know we want to see some video on this.
Kenneth LukSpectatorHi Ron,
The ones I’ve done well are always not recorded! Here’are the photos anyway .Ken
Kenneth LukSpectatorLaser treatment time:34secs
No post-op analgesics required
Baby response was uneventful.
Will take 7 days post-op next wk.

Glenn van AsSpectatorHey Ken……..great photos. Really neat. I think its cool that you can do this. I dont think that other diodes have the short gated pulse or the high power that you are using. I am also not sure that its for the inexperienced (not you because you know a ton) to use those high wattages .
Cool case. Post some more on here……I am intrigued.
Glenn
Kenneth LukSpectatorHi Glenn,
Thanks for the compliment. In fact, there’s a setting named Epulis on the touch screen.
Here’s a 1 wk post-op. Biopsy confirmed as congenital epulis.
