Glenn van AsSpectatorWell folks it is amazing the strength, and emotional fortitude of some people. THis weekend before a standing room only crowd at the Hard Rock Casino……ooops that was another story!!
Actually in front of a standing room only crowd at LVI , Allen kindly volunteered to have his incisal edge restored by myself . The procedure was done live with the video feed from the microscope transferred to another room where people could watch on a huge and I mean huge screen while we did the work.
I desensitized for 2 mins gradually getting closer to the edge. Started at 25Hz and 240 mj (6w) for 2 minutes and got just to the incisal edge frosting to make sure it was ok.
Then we prepped the tooth at 30 Hz adn 70-100 mj. Etched and then bonded and placed in a flowable (its really all we had) of Point 4 . Allen is going to have his lowers replaced by veneers I think and that is why the attrition was there in the first place as he has veneers on the upper arch.
IT really takes a great guy to step up to the plate like Allen did without fear for his life or his heart!!
I owe him a drink next time we run into eachother.
I also want to thank David Kimmel, and Albert in addition to Allen for putting up with Jerry Wildmans crazy and sparkly shirt at the Hard Rock Casino. We had a few laughs and it was great talking to everyone.
The laser connection from here is a strong one and I really enjoyed meeting you all.
I did have to rush out over an emergency with one of my staff on Sunday but it all worked out ok after she went AWOL for a couple of hours.
Thanks again and here are Allens photos.

AnonymousGuestGlenn,
Couldn’t you have done the contralateral tooth w/ the er,cr:YSGG so we could compare (you know with all the debate lately) ?
Nice case, Glenn/Allen
Glenn, if you get a chance can you elaborate on the floss trick you mentioned on the other thread?
Thanks,
SwpmnSpectatorHad a lot of fun participating in the live patient demo!!! Glad I could help out, Glenn. Only thing felt was the cold water from the DELight erbium’s irrigation spray which makes me think we should really make an effort to heat the water.

Glenn van AsSpectatorHey Allen………awesome photos
I really enjoyed myself and will say that the water can be warmed up in the water bottle to prevent the cold from affecting the tooth.
I really wanted to thank you, it was very kind of you to volunteer and you were a great patient.
I learned alot from the event and check out the post in the Continuing Ed section as I placed the pics from the soft tissue case in there.
You can edit them and repost them in another section if you want.

Glenn van AsSpectatorHI Ron…….your name came up alot during the weekend and always with a smile about how no one mentions the brand of the laser but how they are using it.
As for the floss, Tim Adams showed it in his lecture , great idea. It helps line up the tissue levels . The centrals and canines should have their zeniths line up and the laterals should be 1/2 to 1 mm more coronal.
You can put a small dot with the erbium or diode where the zenith should be and draw out the tissue lines with the erbium to make it easier to see what you are going to remove.
A light setting of say 10 Hz and 30 mj with the water off will lightly etch the tissue and give you a line to follow……
Does that make sense??
Thanks again to everyone for making it so much fun.
Glenn
2thlaserSpectatorGreat stuff guys, wish I could have been there. What scope were you using Glenn? I know it was Global, is it a new one/model?
Mark
Glenn van AsSpectatorHi Mark: they redesigned the arm in April of this year and released it at the CDA (California dental association)
Its easier to move and the light (metal halide) is very small ( not on this unit) and all the wires can be kept inside the arm (looks better).
The bearings they used make it much easier to move around, and the next step for them is to do some tricky stuff with the optics but that will take a while.
The color now comes in white or beige.
This scope was their 4 step model but there were a few headaches with me working in another op.
I was quite pleased with the digital photos as I didnt have much there with me other than my adapter and camera.
There was alot of interest in the microscope afterwards, especially from David Kimmel who told me his wife is gonna kill me…….
GRIN
Allen was great, and it all worked out.

Glenn
Glenn van AsSpectatorPS , you can see from how red my face was and Allens that it was
1. HOT
2. Very nerve wracking.Glenn
ASISpectatorHi Glenn,
You no doubt performed well under pressure inspite of being placed on the spot. Well done, Glenn.
Your face may be kind of red but yur gloved hands seem pretty nonperspiratory. Cool hand Glenn.
Andrew
AlbodmdSpectatorJust wanted to say thanks and kudos to Glenn for doing those procedures live for us. It was a great learning experience. We viewed it through a microscope projected onto a screen that took up the whole wall in the big meeting hall. Imagine 40-50 dentists watching you work that closely on a patient you had never met before. I was amazed he was able to do the soft tissue work with just topical and the patient never jumped!
I was truly amazed at some of the stuff people are doing with lasers. Larry Kotlow had video of him releasing some tongue ties on infants that were weeks old with the Er:YAG. Hearing the stories of the infants improvement by the mothers was heartwarming. I never would of thought someone could incorporate a hard tissue laser and microscope into a pedo practice as effectively as Larry has. It was really a great meeting. Kimmel took the hydrokinetics ribbing with a smile and there were actually a couple other biolase users there. Jerry Wildman’s shirt will stick in my mind for awhile along with a lot of the other “sites” at Hard Rock. Vegas was rocking that weekend because of the De la Hoya fight. LVI has some awesome facilities.
