well, I jumped into the deep end today and fired up my new erbium for the first time. it was exciting and a bit nerve twinging. by th eend of the day I had done 3 anterior class 3’s, 4 molar occlusals, and a gingival recountour for crown lengthening. The anteriors were amazing, no anesthesia and a great patient experience. Noticed a few white lines at comp/tooth interface after completion. The C/L also went very well. The 4 occlusals were a bit tougher. sensitivity seemed to be a problem. I was using the enamal setting on my Delight and a 400u tip. guess I am on the very first inclination of the learning curve! looking forward to moving upwards.

    Hi Paul,

Try the 600u tip if sensitivity is a problem. Less energy if the diameter is greater. Were these all done without local?

    Congrats.

Paul life will never be the same in the office. It is an adventure. As ASI less energy is better. I don’t have the Delight so Al, Albert and Glenn will have to jump in but the Delight enamel settings from the factory are probably too high. Less is better. Unless your talking about magnification then more is better. Darn ,I probably did a segway for Glenn and the scope with that one.
The white lines can be a problem. Usually an indication of too much energy. Take a small spoon and rub over the area and the white lines will go away. Think of it as enamal char. An easy check is to wet the area if you see the white albation areas on the enamel ,polish it off. I suspect bonding to such areas would yeild a poor bond.
    Good luck.

Great post Paul, we’re very happy for you!!!

Your findings are similar to what I see – no local anesthesia on molars can be a challenge, especially when you need a higher energy setting for teeth which have been exposed to fluoride.

Dr. Kimmel’s comments on eliminating the white line problem are excellent.  We learned from Graeme Milicich to scrape off the anhydrous products of ablation at the margin.

Keep us posted on your success!!!

Thanks for all the support from all of you. I am grabbing the laser every oportunity I have and heading up that curve. I will have to start investing in a few other Instruments as I go to make life with light easier.
Had a patient in yesterday who was crying towards the end of treatment. (3 anterior class 3 comp replacements) thankfully she was crying due happiness for not having to have had needles! She felt nothing during the whole proceedure! it was great, and I was well into dentin.

    Hi David,

My wife believes that I need a mic and more lasers. 😉

However, familiy priorities come first. We’re expecting our third and fourth children (Twins- boys)in April.
I deferred the Sept Vegas trip to Feb.
Now trip to Feb. looks remote. wow.gif

I’d like to complete the courses before getting the lasers. Do you think I can get started and taking the course at a later date?

As for the mic, I get to share one with my endodontist for the time being. 😉

At least you’ve got the Perioscope and the Waterlase. I’m still only using my 980.

In time, I’m sure we’ll get there. Let there be LIGHT.

    Regards,

    Ken

    Hi Ken

I don’t have the laser yet, but it is hopefully on the way.  What I do have, however is the twins.  Mine are now 2.5 years old and I did manage to make it to Las Vegas to the HBC laser course.  There is light at the end of the tunnel, it is just a little hard to see.  You will get back to going to courses some time.  I’ve always thought that twins were tremendously funny as long as they belong to someone else.  Don’t worry, they are survivable.

    Good luck
