N8RVSpectatorAs a new DELight owner, I’m looking for quality training. The ConBio seminar at LVI is probably not possible until September.
There’s a course “Symphony of Light” featuring the Opus lasers in Chicago at the same time, which I might be able to make. They also offer ALD certification upon completion and examination.
Is it reasonable to take this course, even if the Er:YAG laser is a different brand? Would it be equally valuable training in lieu of the LVI course?
Any thoughts would be appreciated…
BenchwmerSpectatorI attended the Opus’ Symphony of Lights last December in Las Vegas.
The Standard ALD Profiency can be attained on the Diode, Erb:YAG and CO2. You do need to join the Academy of Laser Dentistry to get the certification.
I thought the program emphasised too much hospital CO2 cases from the 90s, too little everyday Erb:YAG and Diode dentistry.
I spoke on Erb:YAG use in Microdentistry and everyday restorative uses and demo’d the Diode. They decided not to make my presentation a part of the program.
The presentation is geared for selling OpusDuos and for new users.

SwpmnSpectatorIf the seminars are at the same time I personally recommend attending the HOYA seminar at LVI. Last November I went to an Opus “Symphony of Light” presentation in Orlando, Florida. Opus puts together a good presentation that is scientifically based. Dr. Robert Convissar, an “old f@rt” in laser dentistry, was one of the instructors and he is quite an entertaining individual. Opus brings hog jaws for practice and one of my colleagues brought some extracted human teeth so that we could evaluate the erbium. Recommended Er:YAG settings will not be applicable to the DELight as Opus advocates very high energy settings at low repetition rates.
The HOYA seminar at LVI provides the most organized, scientifically-based and least biased presentation on laser physics, safety and laser-oral tissue interactions. I speak from experience as have attended seminars given by all three major erbium companies. HOYA provides you with a nice CD prior to the seminar so that you can review and learn the didactic material.
However, it’s good to attend seminars given by all the manufacturers. You learn something at every gathering and get to know people who have been involved with laser dentistry much longer than ourselves.

Glenn van AsSpectatorHi there: I agree with Allen and Jeff……..now for some real news regarding training.
Don Wilson and I will be doing our first advanced laser course specific for the Erbium Yag from Hoya (the DeLight) at the Ross Nash Institute in Charlotte NC on August 12-14th, 2004.
Another alternative is the LVI training institute in September.
There also will be some advanced training in Costa Rica that I will be doing for Hoya the last two weeks in August (one week course each) which will involve 30 docs or so.
Let me know if I can help you, I will be talking to Mr. Tom Haney tomorrow here in Vancouver at the AACD from Hoya and can ask him when the brochures are done for the courses.
THere are several people trying to get some advanced training courses together for the Delight.
Hope that helps and my suggestions are.
1. Take courses specific to your laser brand first
2. Take an ALD course second (no bias and very scientitic to eliminate the hype)
3. Take another brands laser.Hope that helps and for those that are interested in the Charlotte course, the Friday Saturday segments will be for laser users already and you have the opportunity to get your standard proficiency at this course.
The Thursday part will be for prospective laser owners and will involve a 4 hour intro course.
Thanks
Glenn
