Keep in mind that a CO2 laser always requires a shot. And the YSGG laser never does for soft tissue work.

Yes, the CO2 may coagulate better than the Erbiums, but we’re not talking about very much blood here.

The patient will have a much more pleasant experience without the use of a CO2 whenever it can be avoided, and that is about 99.9999% of the time.

I have had the waterlase for a year, and you couldn’t give me a CO2 laser. Well, for free maybe!!

If you are having to actually use the CO2 laser on a regular basis you are destrying the incredible marketing advantage that a hard tissue laser gives you. “no shot dentistry”. You’re shooting yourself in the foot.

I found that in the begining any laser would do because I knew nothing about them.
Like Al I think that the best wavelengths for hard tissus applications are the erbium lasers Er,Cr:YSGG and Er:YAG
My research in lasers wavelengths and my three years of experience show me that the best for soft tissue application is the 980 diode.
I work with the Hoya erbium since 2 years and I had no problem with that laser.I do most of my work without anesthesic.
Good luck and have fun.  Don’t rush yourself

    Never??
    Infrequently, perhaps
or once in a blue moon, maybe- but never?

Al, it sounds like the extended warranty is a must?? Or does that depend on the particular Er machine?? I will indeed take another course. Dan

    Dan:

I’m not saying the extended warranty is an absolute must, in my experience it may be possible to wait and buy the extension at the time something goes wrong with the laser beyond your 12 month warranty. Ask your sales rep about this and like Dr. Gregg said, get something in writing. You wouldn’t want to automatically buy the extension, then say 10 months into it something goes wrong and now you only have 8 weeks left if something else fails.

    Ford vs. Chevy?

Just kidding! However, there are some similarities. Fords and Chevys have different engines, but they both have four tires, a steering wheel and get you where you want to go.

It is unfortunate that with all of the benefits of laser dentistry that we, as comsumers, find it hard to get straight information from laser company reps. I started with the Pulsemaster 600 from ADT. I then bought the Laser Smile and the Waterlase. I was definitely worried when I found out the ADT was going down the tubes. Thankfully Biolase bought them out and I again have a source for parts. It is hard to know what company will provide the best service for you. The best thing to do it find dentists who are using different wavelengths and go use them all.

Of course, the more you learn, the easier it is to talk youself into another laser (or a scope, or a Dental View, or…….).

We are all fortunate to have this forum where we can discuss the issues we all face day to day. Best of luck to you, Dan. I’m sure you’ll find a laser that works for you.

    Kelly,
Speaking of Dentalview, the Perioscope is no longer available. They weren’t at ADA, and according to Bob Barr, they are not in business. However, rumor has it they might resurface from Europe??? Sad when a company doesn’t make it.

Ok. Denatlview is still here. They are outsorucing the manufacturing. Yep they have some &#36 problems. They backed out of the ADA because the cost was greater then the preceived gain.
Sounds like they are doing some needed restructuring.
The thing works. The cost is the kicker. If they can bring the cost down and market they will be a winner. In the last 3 months we have done &#3618.375 in increased production form just the perioscope. This is a better ROI then both of my lasers put together.

    Dan,
Congrats on doing your research before buying the laser. Lots to know and consider. I bought the DELight from conbio and have been very happy with it. All the lasers work about the same and do pretty much the same things. I liked the delivery system of the DELight and have been more than happy with the service, reliability, and training. Conbio is a big company with a history of making medical lasers. I don’t believe they are publicly traded as are biolase and lumenis (opus). With my stock investing history, I would be the last person to evaluate these companies financially. I think they’re all stable, but who really knows. You have a great resource in the folks here. Best of luck.

Sitting in Napa right now with a fine glass of red, heading to Tahoe tomorrow and home to Seattle. I am so pleased to have found this forum. I had the pleasure of meeting Mark at the Biolase booth at ADA last week–great guy–thanks Mark for the one on one info. including your amazing crown prep. Having started this thread, probably best I comment as a newbie what I have observed. This forum is MUCH more sedate than what I observed at Dental Town–wow. Eric who?? He makes some sense, but, attack, attack….It appears that we have many fine machines available to us. The companies all have their pros/cons. However, this is not unlike the manufacturers that we are all used to in the dental market. I have my share of totally unusable devices and materials stuck away (of course they should be in the dumpster

but whoknows—maybe someday?? since I am 57, it may be when I am in the wheel chair and my wife is adjusting the O2 to keep me at chairside–she does not want me retired and at home drinking beer and watching Oprah)I just hope I do not invest in a laser system that is not supported. I named the thread Opus vs. Biolase. I have learned that their are other viable systems to investigate. Thanks to all of you. I willl stay in contact and hope to meet many of you at future laser forums. Anyone interested in the Great NW and the Seattle area, let me know–would be happy to host a clinic in my office. Dan
